As we kick off our One Book, One School reading adventure with Wayside School is Falling Down  today, here are a few things you and your students may want to do... (I invited Mr. Sachar to join us as an author on this blog!!??)

  • Visit Louis Sachar's official website
  • Take some time to discuss
    • Why school are usually built with all the classrooms on one floor?
    • What might happen if by some unusual accident a school building got built sideways... with each classroom on top of each other, with one classroom on it's very own floor?
  • If I was at Wayside School I would hate it if I fell down the stairs. - 3rd Grade- Frankie & Paul

What if everybody was on the stairs and 2 people fell over the rail, then everybody might fall down. - 3rd Grade- Clay & Amore

If I was at Wayside School I would be so tired of going up and down stairs. I would want to go home on the kindergarten bus everyday. I would be so happy. -3rd Grade- Helen, Arati, & Dulce

If I was at Wayside School I would feel really happy because there is a lot of crazy things like people falling out of the building, cows invading the school, and dead rats. I would not like to go there because there are a lot of stairs. -3rd Grade Bryan & Josue

If I was at Wayside School it would feel wacky & funny. If I was a student at wayside school I would want someone to build an elevator so I wouldn’t have to walk up all those stairs! -3rd Grade Sara & Karina

After reading about Mr. Sachar I learned that when his dad worked on the 78 floor at the Empire State building, he said that he might have thought up the idea of Wayside School from visiting his father at the Empire State Building. That is what I thought was interesting. - 5th Grade, Jaiden

I learned that some of the characters in the Wayside School books are based on people Mr. Sachar met while working at Hillside Elementary School while he was a teacher assistant as a part time job in college. 5th Grade, Jonah

I thought it was interesting that he had orange fights with his friends when he lived in California as a child. -5th Grade, Kyah
